THE—ARCHITECTURE OF GRAVITY
The Overhang Monolith serves as a radical exploration of structural tension and singular materiality. Defined by its massive cantilevered roof, the structure appears to defy the harsh Icelandic winds, creating a sheltered sanctuary that prioritizes the relationship between heavy mass and the vast, open horizon.
THE—OBSIDIAN CONCRETE
Utilizing a proprietary mix of post-tensioned dark basalt concrete, the project achieves a finish that mirrors the surrounding volcanic landscape. The texture is intentionally raw—a tactile response to the elemental forces of the North, ensuring the building feels like an extension of the earth itself rather than an imposition.
THE—THERMAL INTEGRATION
The structure is partially embedded into the slope, utilizing geothermal energy to maintain a constant interior warmth. High-performance glazing wraps the living areas, offering unobstructed views of the aurora borealis while keeping the harsh Arctic climate at bay. The interior surfaces are polished to a high sheen, reflecting the ethereal winter light.
THE—ELEMENTAL BALANCE
This project represents a balance between human intervention and nature's dominance. The architecture does not attempt to tame the landscape; instead, it provides a secure vantage point from which to witness it. It is a monument to endurance, designed to weather the centuries as a silent observer of the Icelandic wild.
